RAWFILL E-Learning tool

The RAWFILL project aims to promote landfill mining and sustainable waste management projects in North-West Europe. For that purpose, it has developed an approach to find the most suitable solution to valorize a landfill either by launching a landfill mining project to recover materials, energy and land, or by developing an interim use for the site (e.g. installation of solar panels, agroforestry, biomass, infrastructure development).

This E-learning tool offers you the opportunity to learn how to use the different tools and methodologies developed within the framework of the project. Are you a private or a public owner of a landfill? Do you want to develop/to invest in a landfill mining project? Are you a public organization in charge of the management of a landfill database? A consultant company that is interested to apply geophysics on landfill sites? Or a student who wants to know more about this topic, linked to circular economy of raw materials?

If one of the answers is yes, then this course is for you!

The E-learning tool will guide you through three video modules showing the RAWFILL tools:

  • ELIF : an evidence-based, cost-effective Enhanced Landfill Inventory Framework (ELIF). It combines all aspects related to landfills: administrative, environmental, social, technical and economical. The added value of this landfill inventory structure is that it includes parameters regarding the economic potential and the social impact of landfill sites. Through this module, you will learn how to improve your landfill database by using the ELIF software. This tool is closely linked to the Decision Support Tools (DSTs). If you are interested to use the Decision Support Tools to revalorize your landfill site, then we suggest you to watch this module first.

  • Decision Support Tools (DST 1 - Cedalion and DST 2 - Orion) for planning, prioritization and interim use of a smart landfill mining project. The DSTs are based on the information collected in the ELIF. The Decision Support Tools will give you an objective answer about the future of a landfill. Which option is the most suitable for my landfill (direct rehabilitation or raw materials recovery)? In case of high value of the land, is it interesting to launch a redevelopment project? Is it possible to restore a landfill in a recreational area? Or is it better to implement solar panels on the landfill? The answer to these questions can be found by applying the DSTs.

  • The RAWFILL’s innovative landfill characterization methodology combining geophysical imaging methods and targeted waste sampling. In comparison with traditional characterization methodology, the RAWFILL characterization methodology helps to reduce the cost and the duration of studies and provide more detailed information about the content of the landfill site. This e-learning module presents the most suitable geophysical methods to use to characterize the waste content of a landfill and the importance of combing several geophysical investigation methods in order to obtain better results. Landfill content characterization is an important parameter to feed the ELIF and the DSTs tools.

You have the possibility to watch one of the e-learning modules or more. For a better user experience, we suggest that you follow the order of the e-learning modules. At the end of each module, you will have to answer a quiz and reach a score of 80% to receive a certificate.
